C-3PO era un esempio di droide protocollare di serie 3PO.
I droidi protocollari erano vitali nell’appianare il divario che esisteva tra le tante incredibili culture che interagivano su base regolare all’interno di una società diffusa nell’arco della galassia.

Dotati di un ampia programmazione primaria sull’etichetta, disponevano inoltre di formidabili abilità di linguisti; venivano spesso impiegati come assistenti nei corpi diplomatici e politici, così come unità di supporto amministrative e accompagnatori per ufficiali di alto rango.

Prodotti principalmente dalla Cybot Galactica ma anche da altre grandi industrie manifatturiere, i protocollari erano dotati di un’avanzata rete neurale chiamata SyntheTech AA-1 VerboBrain, un modulo cognitivo d’altissimo livello tecnologico che donava ad ogni droide una distinta personalità ed un forte senso d’individualità; come risultato, le personalità sviluppate dai protocollari erano vivide come quelle degli stessi senzienti, complete di una gamma d’emozioni reali e potenziali di crescita. Il sofisticato modulo comunicazione TranLang III che si trovava in ogni unità 3PO standard era capace di riprodurre oltre sei milioni di linguaggi ed il suo sistema di sintetizzazione vocale/sonora era in grado di riprodurre ogni suono che il droide udiva.

Prodotti in svariate forme, la maggior parte erano umanoidi, come coloro cui si accompagnavano.
