La colonna sonora di Star Wars Episodio VI: Il ritorno dello Jedi fu registrata presso gli studios di Abbey Road (Londra) nei mesi di Gennaio e Febbraio del 1983 dalla London Symphony Orchestra. Con quest'opera, Williams si guadagnò un'altra nomination all'Oscar. A causa della rapida perdita di popolarità del formato vinilico, la colonna sonora de 'Il Ritorno dello Jedi' - la più lunga fra quelle della Trilogia Originale - venne pubblicata su un solo LP invece di due, diversamente da quelle di Una nuova speranza e L'Impero colpisce ancora.

Star Wars Trilogy: The Original Soundtrack Anthology
Nel 1993, la Twentieth Century Fox Film Scores pubblicò un cofanetto contenente le musiche dalla Trilogia Originale. Oltre al terzo CD, quello con lo score de Il Ritorno dello Jedi, l'opera conteneva anche la trasposizione digitale dei brani dei primi due film, per la prima volta disponibili in un formato differente dall'originale LP. Il prodotto includeva un quarto disco di brani aggiuntivi da tutti e tre i film, dei quali sono qui riportati quelli relativi a Il Ritorno dello Jedi.
