Il Nucleo Profondo era la regione più interna e astrofisicamente instabile della Galassia. Nascosto fra ammassi di stelle superconcentrati e buchi neri, il Nucleo Profondo (chiamato anche Nucleo Profondo Galattico o Sistemi del Nucleo) ospitava mondi dalle caratteristiche insolite.
A causa dell'attrazione gravitazionale esercitata dalla gran quantità di corpi celesti, lo spaziotempo subiva oscillazioni locali imprevedibili; pertanto, il transito iperspaziale era estremamente difficile e pericoloso, tant'è che la regione fu ritenuta inaccessibile finché l'Imperatore Palpatine non vi scoprì alcune rotte sicure.
Il Nucleo Profondo rimase sotto stretto controllo imperiale fino ad almeno vent'anni dopo la Battaglia di Endor.
