Gli Wookiee, il cui nome tradotto nel loro linguaggio significava Popolo degli Alberi, erano una razza di umanoidi bipedi ricoperti di pelo, abitanti del pianeta Kashyyyk. Uno dei membri più noti di questa razza fu Chewbacca, il migliore amico e copilota di Han Solo, i quali giocarono un ruolo di primo piano nella Guerra Civile Galattica e oltre.

Caratteristiche

La razza degli alti e imponenti Wookiee, giganti pelosi originari del pianeta arboreo di Kashyyyk, era una vista impressionante persino per il più navigato viaggiatore spaziale. Nonostante il loro aspetto temibile e selvaggio, gli Wookiee erano intelligenti, sofisticati, leali e fidati. La lealtà e il coraggio erano valori quasi sacri nella società Wookiee. Quando in pace, essi erano teneri e cordiali. La loro indole, tuttavia, era battagliera: quando adirati, gli Wookiee potevano essere colti da feroce collera, che non si placava fino a che l’oggetto del loro turbamento non era sufficientemente distrutto.

Un adulto Wookiee medio era più alto di 2 metri, e possedeva una vita media di alcuni secoli. Oltre a grande forza e sensi affinati, gli Wookiee avevano anche notevoli abilità rigenerative che gli permettevano di riprendersi dalle ferite in tempi record. Essi possedevano inoltre affilati artigli retrattili che usano per arrampicarsi. Le loro regole d’onore ne proibivano l’uso in combattimento. Uno Wookiee che violasse questa regola veniva emarginato ed esiliato, marchiato come “artigliopazzo” e bandito dalle città.

Carattere e personalità

Gli Wookiee erano profondamente rispettosi della natura, ed avevano una forte connessione con la sacralità ecologica del loro mondo. Quando l’Impero iniziò a sfruttare il pianeta, fu come se i giganti sentissero sulla loro pelle il dolore inflitto a Kashyyyk. Essi hanno inoltre dimostrato la loro particolare affinità con la Forza.

Anche se gli Wookiee erano in grado di comprendere il Basic, e altre lingue galattiche, il loro limitato apparato vocale poteva solo produrre il loro linguaggio nativo. La lingua più comune era lo Shyriiwook, un dialetto di latrati, grugniti, ulilati e ruggiti. Questa lingua era molto complessa e fluente. La violenza era un affare così quotidiano che esistevano per indicarla ben 15 parole diverse nel loro vocabolario. Il legno e il suo artigianato, assieme alla tecnologia, erano così importanti che esistevano 100 vocaboli per descriverli.

Storia

Gli Wookiee svilupparono l’abilità di lasciare il proprio pianeta millenni prima della Battaglia di Yavin. A quei tempi, acquisirono la necessaria spinta tecnologica dai loro vicini spaziali, i Trandoshani, i quali giunsero sul pianeta forestale nella speranza di stabilirvi della colonie. I fieri nativi Wookiee li respinsero, ma i Trandoshani si lasciarono alle spalle un’astronave che i curiosi Wookiee smantellarono, analizzarono, e replicarono facilmente. Ben presto i primi esploratori Wookiee lasciarono Kashyyyk per avventurarsi nelle oscure profondità spaziail. Quando la Repubblica Galattica ebbe il primo contatto col pianeta, gli Wookiee erano in guerra con i Trandoshani. La Repubblica mendiò la disputa, e gil Wookiee entrarono entusiasticamente a far parte della comunità galattica.

Ai tempi della Repubblica Galattica, il pianeta natale degli Wookiee Kashyyyk era rappresentato all’interno del Senato Galattico da diversi esponenti della loro razza. Fedele alla Repubblica, Kashyyyk rivestiva un’importanza strategica fondamentale, essendo il principale punto di navigazione dell’intero quadrante sud-occidentale della galassia. Questo lo rese obiettivo della Confederazione dei Sistemi Indipendenti, la quale invase Kashyyyk durante la Guerra dei Cloni. Le forze Repubblicane, sotto il comando di Yoda, vennero inviate a proteggere il pianeta. Yoda aveva instaurato un buon rapporto con gli Wookiee durante la sua lunga vita, ed essi si fidavano della sua leadership. Le forze Jedi, cloni, e Wookiee combatterono valorosamente per proteggere le città sugli alberi di Kashyyyk.

La lealtà del pianeta significò ben poco per l’Impero senza scrupoli che nacque dalle ceneri della Repubblica. Nonostante la loro dimostrata intelligenza, gli Wookiee vennero ridotti in schiavitù e sfruttati per via della loro forza bruta. Il loro pianeta venne assediato, e gli Wookiee liberi divennero una vista piuttosto rara nella galassia.

Quando l’Impero legalizzò la schiavitù, una delle prime popolazioni a trarne profitto furono i Trandoshani. Questi esseri simili a rettili originari di un pianeta vicino a Kashyyyk avevano avuto per lungo tempo contrasti con gli Wookiee.

Probabilmente il più noto di questi Wookiee fu Chewbacca, fedele copilota e amico del famoso contrabbandiere Corelliano Han Solo. Chwebacca fu fondamentale per la sconfitta dell’Impero, e in seguito per la liberazione della sua gente.

Dopo che l’Impero venne sconfitto, la schiavitù collassò. Gli invasori alieni Nagai tentarono di ripristinare questa deprecabile pratica, ma vennero respinti dagli agenti dell’Alleanza dei Pianeti Liberi.

Società e cultura

Kashyyyk era un pianeta avvolto da immense foreste. Nelle zone interne, gli alberi erano così alti e densi da aver permesso lo sviluppo di un ecosistema stratificato fra i suoi rami. Più ci si avvicinava al fondo della foresta, più l’ambiente diventava primordiale e pericoloso. Gli Wookiee popolavano i livelli superiori della foresta, avendo costruito le loro grandi città al di sotto dei tetti intessuti di foglie.

Gli Wookiee avevano una società basata sul patriarcato, comprensiva di una complicata struttura ereditaria, riti di iniziazione, ed una religione che disdegnava il materialismo. Una delle tradizioni più importanti era il Giorno della Vita, durante il quale le famiglie estese Wookiee si riunivano e celebravano la giornata con gioia ed armonia, come promesso dall’Albero della Vita. Persino l’occupazione Imperiale non riuscì ad impedire loro di ricordare il loro giorno più importante.

Gli Wookiee valorizzavano grandemente la moralità, il coraggio, la compassione e la lealtà. Una tradizione sacra e antica era quella della famiglia d’onore. Una famiglia d’onore comprendeva i più stretti amici e compagni di uno Wookiee. I membri di queste famiglie promettevano fedeltà mettendo le loro vite al servizio degli altri, così come i membri di qualsiasi famigila d’onore questi potessero avere. Come il simile e altrettanto sacro debito di vita, gli Wookiee estendevano questa tradizione anche a membri di altre razze. Chewbacca considerava Han Solo, Leia Organa Solo, i loro figli, e Luke Skywalker parte della propria famiglia d’onore.

Nonostante gli Wookiee avessero un aspetto primitivo, si trovavano piuttosto a loro agio con la tecnologia avanzata. Erano in grado infatti di conservare moderne astronavi. Svilupparono anche una originale arma a proiettili chiamata appunto balestra Wookiee o bowcaster. La città di Thikkiiana era uno dei produttori chiave di sofisticata computer componentistica per la Nuova Repubblica.
