I Twi'lek erano una razza umanoide onnivora originaria del pianeta Ryloth. Tendevano a cibarsi di muffe coltivate, funghi e carne di rycrit. La pigmentazione della loro pelle poteva variare in divese tonalità di colore a seconda dell'individuo, ed il loro segno distintivo era sicuramente la coppia di tentacoli prensili che crescevano alla base del loro cranio, i quali erano chiamati lekku. I Twi'lek possedevano una struttura vocale umanoide piuttosto standard, ed erano in grado di imparare la maggior parte delle lingue aliene, tuttavia preferivano parlare la loro lingua nativa, il Twi'leki, il quale comprendeva particolari movimenti dei lekku. Poche cose erano piene di grazia come una femmina Twi'lek in movimento. Queste splendide figure hanno condannato da sempre generazioni di giovani Twi'Lek alla servitù, così come l'opulenza e la corruzione sono divenuti presso questo popolo un marchio di prestigio.

Biologia e aspetto

I Twi'lek rano alti (normalmente tra il metro e ottanta ed i due metri), generalmente magri umanoidi, e la loro pigmentazione copriva una vasta gamma di colori: verde, arancione, marrone, giallo, blu, grigio, rosa, nero, bianco, e porpora, tutti in diverse tonalità. Altri tipi di Twi'lek comprendevano il particolare e raro turchese del ceppo Rutian, e la più rara pigmentazione rossa propria del ceppo Lethan, il cui colore della pelle era causato da una mutazione del codice genetico. Alcuni Twi'lek coloravano la loro pelle per ottenere particolari disegni, come ad esempio la ballerina Ayy Vida.

Il loro tratto maggiormente distintivo era la coppia di tentacoli prensili che cresceva dalla base del loro cranio, i lekku, che provvedevano ad alcune funzioni sensoriali e cognitive, oltre all' essere coinvolte nella espletazione di parte del linguaggio del loro pianeta madre, Ryloth.

Questa lingua, il Twi'Leki, era una combinazione di comunicazioni fisiche e linguistiche in cui i lekku, con contrazioni e sinuosi movimenti, sottolineavano il contenuto emotivo delle frasi; spesso era possibile vedere dei Twi'Lek comunicare fra loro in mezzo ad una folla senza essere compresi da altri proprio grazie al solo linguaggio mimico delle loro appendici.

Ogni Twi'Lek era fiero dei propri lekku,che provvedeva a mantenere sempre puliti ed in ordine, è cosa nota inoltre che i lekku, chiamati convenzionalmente tchin (il destro) e tchun (il sinistro) singolarmente e tchun-tchin se considerati come coppia, fossero zone erogene della razza.Sebbene il ceppo genetico principale preveda due soli lekku, esistevano soggetti in cui il numero variava da uno a quattro.

Sia i maschi che le femmine erano privi di peluria corporea, con l'unica eccezione delle ciglia per proteggersi dalla sabbia e dal calore di Ryloth. Le femmine solevano truccarsi le sopracciglia oppure tauarsele, per apparire più piacenti e meno aliene. Boc Aseca aveva pelo corporeo sotto le ascelle e sul petto, ma non è chiaro se questo fosse il risultato di una mutazione genetica, di una rara sottospecie, o altro.

Le femmine Twi'lek erano considerate particolarmente attraenti e aggraziate, cosa che le rendeva soggetti preferiti per la schiavitù e l'intrattenimento. La bellezza delle femmine di questa razza era nota in tutta la galassia, e per questo molte ragazze nubili venivano vendute come schiave, o diventavano ballerine, o status symbol.

Onnivori, i Twi'lek si cibavano principalmente di alcuni tipi di muffe e funghi che essi stessi coltivavano, oltre che della carne di animali conosciuti come rycrit. Erano dotati di più stomaci, usati alla stregua del rumine in alcune razze bovine.

Personalità

La razza aveva una astuta disposizione alla pazienza ed all'adattabilità. Come hanno appreso dall'evoluzione nel loro ambiente naturale, nella sopravvivenza alle aspre tempeste che ne battevano la superficie, la forza non era sempre palesata nel confronto; come recitava un proverbio Twi'Lek: "Qualcuno può sconfiggere la tempesta, qualcun altro può cavalcarla".

I Twi'lek hanno raggiunto un livello di sviluppo tecnologico di tipo industriale, con mulini a vento e turbine che provvedevano alla produzione di energia elettrica per le loro case.

Ogni nucleo urbano era autonomo e governato da un capo clan. Non disponendo di tecnologia propria per la astro-navigazione spesso si affidavano alla tecnologia dei mondi vicini (come Tatooine), ai pirati, ai mercanti ed ai contrabbandieri per i loro contatti con il resto della galassia.

Il pianeta Ryloth era la principale fonte nella galassia del ryll, un potente stimolante minerale, che portava a forme di dipendenza, utilizzato nella sintetizzazione di alcune droghe. Le attenzioni che molte organizzazioni criminali hanno riservato al pianeta sono state reindirizzate dagli stessi Twi'Lek su una redditizia tratta degli schiavi, che gli ha concesso di riuscire a mantenere il controllo sulle preziose miniere di ryll. Sfortunatamente a pagare lo scotto di questo deprecabile commercio furono molti dei giovani del pianeta, sopratutto di sesso femminile.

La naturale grazia e l'esotica bellezza delle femmine Twi'lek le rese un obiettivo popolare fra i commercianti di schiavi. Molti Twi'lek addirittura incoraggiavano questo commercio. Alcuni lo vedevano come una possibilità di fare soldi, rapendo o vendendo orfane, mentre altri lo ritenevano un modo di salvare le bambine dal crescere in un ambiente così aspro come Ryloth. Molti Twi'lek credevano che la schiavitù fosse un modo efficace per proliferare la loro razza e per preservare la cultura, dato che il popolo non possedeva mezzi per il viaggio interstellare.

Anche se molti maschi intraprendevano la carriera di mercanti o addirittura criminali, la razza aveva anche una fiera e onorabile tradizione guerriera. Furono proprio i guerrieri Twi'lek a inventare il Chir'daki o il Deathseed, caccia che sposavano l'abitacolo dei caccia TIE con le ali a S degli X-Wing. Durante la Guerra del Bacta, i guerrieri Twi'lek aiutarono Wedge Antilles nella lotta contro Ysanne Isard.

L'abbigliamento dei Twi'lek dipendeva dal loro sesso. I maschi indossavano vesti lunge e larghe, mentre le femmine erano abbigliate in modo piuttosto succinto per mantenere le loro forme sinuose e per aumentare il loro valore fra i maschi.

La società era divisa in clan, e ciascun clan aveva la propria città. Ogni città aveva il proprio governo, che era guidato da cinque membri del clan. Questi cinque Twi'lek governavano la propria società fino a che uno di essi non moriva. A quel punto, i restanti membri venivano mandati nel deserto durante il giorno, presumibilmente a morire, in modo da permettere alle generazioni successive di prendere il loro posto. Se la generazione successiva non era ancora pronta per reclamare tale posizione, allora veniva scelto un gruppo di reggenti per governare ad interim.
